These were individuals with a lower level of education or a lower household income, people with a non-Western immigrant background, those with chronic health conditions and physical disabilities, and overweight people. Some groups tend to be less physically active. For adolescents sports, riding a bike to school (or work) and gym class at school were the most important sources of physical activity. For them, the most important sources of physical activity were playing outside at recess and in their free time, as well as taking part in sports. However, the findings among children were different. In general, the most important sources of physical activity were walking in leisure time, playing sports and cycling in leisure time. This study was the first time that researchers looked at which physical activities were most significant for different groups in meeting the Physical Activity Guidelines. Activities that count toward the recommendation The Council recommends that both groups do activities that strengthen muscles and bones. The recommendation for children is at least one hour of physical activity every day. Walking and cycling are examples of this kind of exercise. These guidelines state that adults should get at least 2.5 hours of moderate to intense physical activity each week, divided between multiple days. The Health Council of the Netherlands has set out Physical Activity Guidelines.
